About
The Band
The band was formed in September 1998 by the
present conductor, Aubrey Beswick.
It is open to all ages and abilities, although we recommend a minimum of approximately
Associated Board Grade IV as a suitable entry point.
It
has traditional concert band instrumentation - a woodwind section consisting of
flutes, clarinets, oboes, saxophones and bassoons, a brass section consisting
of trumpets/cornets, horns, trombones, baritone/euphonium and basses, and a
percussion section.
We
play a varied program, ranging from music specifically written for this
combination of instruments by composers such as Vaughan Williams, Phillip Sparke and Holst, arrangements of
popular music and film scores (Star Wars, Titanic etc), traditional marches and
the like by composers such as Sousa, and also arrangements of music from the
orchestral repertoire.
We
rehearse every Thursday evening from 7pm until 9 pm at Drighlington Junior
School, opposite the Spotted Cow pub on the A58 Leeds/Halifax road. Click here for a map, or contact us for more details.
Aubrey Beswick - Director of Music
Prior
to his retirement in 1998, Aubrey was Head of Woodwind for Leeds Education
Authority, and had formed the City of Leeds Youth Concert Band in 1980.
This ensemble drew from all schools in the Leeds area, and performed
extensively both home and abroad. (A number of the adults in the band
originally played with this ensemble as schoolchildren).
As
a composer, Aubrey has written several works for concert band, many of which
were first performed by the CLYCB, including "Touchdown", a march
written in honour of Rugby League.
Now
retired, Aubrey still undertakes a small amount of teaching in addition to his involvement
as Director of Music of the Morley and District Concert Band.
